90/Al-Balad-1: La oqsimu bihatha albaladi
Nay! I swear by this city.

90/Al-Balad-2: Waanta hillun bihatha albaladi
And you are a dweller (made free from obligation) in this city,

90/Al-Balad-3: Wawalidin wama walada
And (by) the begetter and that which he begot.

90/Al-Balad-4: Laqad khalaqna alinsana fee kabadin
Certainly We have created man (to be) in distress (hardship).

90/Al-Balad-5: Ayahsabu an lan yaqdira AAalayhi ahadun
Does he reckon (think) that no one has power over him?

90/Al-Balad-8: Alam najAAal lahu AAaynayni
Have We not make for him a pair of eyes,

90/Al-Balad-9: Walisanan washafatayni
And a tongue and two lips,

90/Al-Balad-10: Wahadaynahu alnnajdayni
And We make them reach the two conspicuous ways (the Way to Guidance and the way to Misguidance).

90/Al-Balad-11: Fala iqtahama alAAaqabata
But he has not attempted to pass on the step (uphill) road,

90/Al-Balad-12: Wama adraka ma alAAaqabatu
And what will make you comprehend what the uphill (steep) road [‘Aqaba] is?

90/Al-Balad-13: Fakku raqabatin
(It is) freeing a neck (a slave).

90/Al-Balad-14: Aw itAAamun fee yawmin thee masghabatin
Or giving food in a day of famine,

90/Al-Balad-15: Yateeman tha maqrabatin
To an orphan, having relationship,

90/Al-Balad-16: Aw miskeenan tha matrabatin
Or to the needy cleaving to dust (out of misery)
