90/Al-Balad-1:

Nay! I swear by this city.
90/Al-Balad-2:

And you are a dweller (made free from obligation) in this city,
90/Al-Balad-3:

And (by) the begetter and that which he begot.
90/Al-Balad-4:
Laqad khalaqn

na fee kabad
in
Certainly We have created man (to be) in distress (hardship).
90/Al-Balad-5:
Aya

sabu an lan yaqdira AAalayhi a

ad
un
Does he reckon (think) that no one has power over him?
90/Al-Balad-6:
Yaqoolu ahlaktu m
a
lan lubad
a
n
He (boastfully) says: I have wasted abundant wealth.
90/Al-Balad-7:
Aya

sabu an lam yarahu a
h
ad
un
Does he reckon (think) that no one sees him?
90/Al-Balad-8:
Alam najAAal lahu AAaynayn
i
Have We not make for him a pair of eyes,
90/Al-Balad-9:
Walis
a
nan washafatayn
i
And a tongue and two lips,
90/Al-Balad-10:
Wahadayn
a
hu a
l
nnajdayn
i
And We make them reach the two conspicuous ways (the Way to Guidance and the way to Misguidance).
90/Al-Balad-11:

ama alAAaqaba
ta
But he has not attempted to pass on the step (uphill) road,
90/Al-Balad-12:
Wam

ka m

alAAaqaba
tu
And what will make you comprehend what the uphill (steep) road [‘Aqaba] is?
90/Al-Balad-13:
Fakku raqaba
tin
(It is) freeing a neck (a slave).
90/Al-Balad-14:
Aw i

mun fee yawmin

ee masghaba
tin
Or giving food in a day of famine,
90/Al-Balad-15:
Yateeman

maqraba
tin
To an orphan, having relationship,
90/Al-Balad-16:
Aw miskeenan
tha
matraba
tin
Or to the needy cleaving to dust (out of misery)
90/Al-Balad-17:

as
aw bi

ama
ti
Then he became one of those who believed (who wished to reach Allah before dying), and counseled (recommended) one another to patience and counseled (recommended) one another to mercy (pity)
90/Al-Balad-18:

These are the companions (the people) of the auspiciousness [these are they whose records of deeds (life films) are given in their right hands]
90/Al-Balad-19:

ti
And (as for) those who disbelieve in Our Verses (Signs), they are the companions (the people) of the inauspiciousness [these are they whose records of deeds (life films) are given in their left hands]
